Meals on Wheels

Senior hunger in America is a monumental problem.  Today, there are nearly 6 million seniors in the United States facing the threat of hunger.  Many of these at risk seniors are homebound due to illness or disability.

The Meals on Wheels program provides 50,000+ nutritious  meals to homebound seniors in Whatcom and San Juan Counties.  This vital service meets a critical need in our community, allowing many seniors to continue to live independently in their homes.  Meals on Wheels also allows many seniors to recover in their homes after a surgery or illness.  All Meals on Wheels participants receive an in home assessment by our Registered Dietitian or another qualified individual.

The 300+ seniors served by Meals on Wheels each year are some of the most at risk elders in our community.

  • Over 85% of our Meals on Wheels clients are considered very low income by HUD guidelines.
  • 60% of those receiving Meals on Wheels in Whatcom County are determined to be at high nutritional risk at the time of our registered dietitian’s initial in-home assessment.
  • All homebound persons age 60 and over are eligible to receive Meals on Wheels.  Although participants are asked to donate what they can to help pay for the meals, no one is denied service due to inability to pay.

Our dedicated Meals on Wheels Volunteers and Staff do more than just deliver meals to seniors.  They provide a warm social connection and often form strong bonds with the clients they serve.  Volunteers  often the first to notice and report a change in an isolated seniors behavior.
